2011 Energy Tax Credit Info

The 2011 Energy Tax Credit Congress has recently modified and expanded the Tax Credit. The new changes took place January 1, 2011, and provide tax credits incentives for energy-efficient home improvements for qualifying windows and doors. Homeowners can accumulate a tax credit of 10 percent of the cost of qualifying energy-efficient improvements to a maximum of $200 per household for 2011. The new law, however, includes the following window product restrictions:
  • Qualifying windows and doors must meet ENERGY STAR.
  • To apply for the tax credit, all receipts, labels and stickers must be saved for those windows purchased.
  • Claims for windows only can be made; associated installation costs, assembly costs, preparation costs and related sales tax cannot be claimed.
  • Windows purchases must be made during the taxable year for which the credit is claimed.
  • The tax credit can be applied when 2011 income tax returns are filed.
